Book Review: Did You Win, Did You Score…?

Did You Win, Did You Score...?

How to help your child succeed at football and life

By Perry Cocking

Andy Reid

Former Republic of Ireland International & Premier League Player

I have known Perry since our time together at Charlton Athletic. Perry was always a great student of football with a passion for coaching children. It’s been no surprise to me that he’s put all his knowledge into this book to help parents, children and coaches get the most out of the game. Football can be a minefield for parents. There are so many choices out there that it can be difficult to know what team is best for your child and what people to trust with their development. I love the fact that Perry has written in so much detail how to not just get the most out of football, but how parents can help use football for their child to get the most out of life. He guides you through the highs and lows of being involved in youth football and explains how you can help your child to fulfil their potential.

I was lucky enough to have played at the highest level but after reading this book I realise that that’s not enough on its own to help my own children. This book has been invaluable to me along my journey as a football parent and I can’t thank him enough.

The biggest compliment I can give this book is that I wish Perry had written it years ago when my boys were young! The attention to detail is incredible and the chapter list of subjects covered is extensive. I think all coaches and managers should read this book as well as parents. It will help them to be better coaches in many different ways. For parents, it’s an absolute must.

Football is a pretty simple game but guiding a child through youth football can often be complicated. We always want what’s best for our children and this book will help guide parents every step of the way. It will undoubtedly help every parent who reads it and will have a positive impact on young football players everywhere.

This book will guide you to help your child live with purpose, pursue their goals with passion and motivation, improve their performances on the pitch, and, most importantly, enjoy the game and have fun. Enjoy the experience and good luck!

Essential Reading for Parents!

This is essential reading for any parent whose child is involved in youth sport. My son is not at an academy but I found the chapters on academy football, and how to support your child through that experience, particularly insightful and are very relevant to any situation where a child is excelling at something at a young age. The author has a real insight into the mindset of football parents and provides excellent advice on how to manage emotions or ambitions that could otherwise risk negatively impacting the child. If I had a criticism it would that the book presents a very specific view of what makes a good coach, and what makes a bad coach, and in my experience, there are actually multiple versions of both which aren’t discussed. This is a minor complaint in what is otherwise a very thought provoking read. – John M (Verified Amazon purchase)
